A cow caribou from the Forty Mile caribou herd jumps out of a river and up onto the bank during their migration from their calving grounds.
The forty mile caribou once stood at over 500,000 animals, but overhunting and development devasted that herd dropping the number to 5,000 animals in the 1970s. Through conservation efforts the herd is recovering and sits at around 50,000 animals.
